Early Life and Education
Faiz Ahmad Faiz belonged to a family of landowners who had migrated from Kashi, India, to Sialkot, Pakistan. He received his early education from Scotch Mission School in Sialkot and then went on to attend the Government College Lahore, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Arabic, Persian, and English literature in 1930. Faiz was an avid reader from a young age and was deeply influenced by the works of poets like Mirza Ghalib, Allama Iqbal, and Hafeez Jalandhari.
Career
After completing his education, Faiz Ahmad Faiz started his career as a lecturer at M. A. O. College, Amritsar. In 1935, he joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS) but resigned in 1947 to join the Progressive Writers' Movement (PWM) and become a full-time writer and journalist. During his time as a civil servant, he was posted in various cities of the undivided British India, including Lahore, Delhi, and Peshawar. He witnessed first-hand the struggles and injustices faced by the common people, which had a profound impact on his writing and political views.
Faiz Ahmad Faiz was a prolific writer and poet who penned numerous books and articles in both Urdu and English. He was one of the most prominent members of the Progressive Writers' Association (PWA) and was known for his leftist political views, which he expressed through his writing. Some of his notable works include 'Dast-e-Saba', 'Zindan Namah', 'Sar-i-Waadi-i-Sina', and 'Mere Dil Mere Musafir'. He also translated the works of several poets and writers, including Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Bertolt Brecht, into Urdu.
Faiz Ahmad Faiz was a leading voice in the struggle for independence and democracy in Pakistan. He was a member of the National Awami Party (NAP) and the Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) and was actively involved in various political and social movements.
